Trace amounts of THC are costing people their jobs.
Now that CBD products are on the shelves in many nations, it’s only natural that folks might wonder: Can using CBD get me fired?
The short answer is “yes.” Stories have already surfaced within a short time since CBD products began hitting the shelf about people losing jobs or failing drug test screenings that are a part of the hiring process at some companies.
The results depend upon the sort of product you’re using and therefore the level of THC it contains. Unlike CBD, THC is the chemical ingredient in marijuana that gets people high. But on faith the packaging, some people won’t realize what proportion THC is in their CBD product. It might be enough to fail a drug test, as multiple cases have shown.
Examples round the country.
It’s a much bigger issue than many might realize. Recently, in Missouri, school worker Lorraine Jeffries said she got fired from her job as a faculty bus monitor after failing a drug test. The drug in question, consistent with Jeffries, maybe a CBD oil her doctor had recommended she deems joint pain.
She said a faculty official told her, “You must are smoking marijuana,” Jeffries told WTKP News. “I said, ‘No, ma’am, I don’t even know where to urge marijuana at.’ i really like my job. They took it far away from me.”
In another case, a video producer in Reno, Nevada, told Consumer Reports he lost the prospect for employment because the drug test he took as a part of the pre-work screening came back positive for marijuana. Just like the school employee in Missouri, he said he had not used marijuana.
In Pennsylvania, a lady has sued a CBD product maker after losing her job over a failed drug test.
There’s also the difficulty of the text itself. In Alabama, a local department recently dropped a field trial it had been using to see for marijuana use. They made the move after they experimented with the test and located it registered a positive result for CBD-infused drinking water that contained no THC.
All of this went on during a relatively short time. Congress just made hemp-derived CBD products legal late in 2018.
Reading the Labels
If you’re using CBD products, the simplest step to require is to thoroughly read the label. Companies are required to list what’s within the product, including the amount (if any) of THC, which is typically just a trace amount (far but 1%).
However, you’ll even be rolling the dice, because apparently not every company is doing this accurately.
In a case involving teamster Douglas poke into NY City, a lawsuit has been filed alleging that the CBD product the driving force took for pain had a better level of THC than what was on the label, consistent with a lawsuit Horn filed.
For entrepreneurs within the marijuana industry, this is often an increasingly important topic. Lawsuits like Horn’s are likely to become more frequent, especially since many consumers could be unaware there’s even an opportunity of THC within the CBD products they buy.
However, the solution might involve improvements made to testing equipment and changes in government regulations. That latter issue is one that’s arising frequently.
“If you are not regulated and you do not manufacture under strict standards for testing, we are seeing that there are people beginning with tons more marijuana THC in it than what people thought,” University of Illinois at Chicago toxicology expert Frank Paloucek told the ABC affiliate in Chicago.
